Jane Williams started MagiKats Cardiff Llandaff North 10 years ago after long career in education. She is a former head teacher and before taking on the MagiKats franchise, spent time overseas as an international school inspector and school consultant.
Jane said, “On returning to the UK, I was looking for a way to stay in education part time. MagiKats stood out because of its good, clear, continuous curriculum which is well resourced and updated. I had been a tutor in Oman for over 20 students and the prep was rather a lot so to have the programmes prepared for me to teach was a real benefit.”
It's a real family affair as Jane’s husband Andy offers administration support and her daughter Buff, a qualified teacher, works in the centre during workshops.

A particularly proud stat we’ve achieved is a 100% pass rate for students in GCSE Maths and English! Some of the centre’s former students have also gone on to become classroom assistants for us, a fantastic testament to the experience they’ve had while studying at our centre.”

Work-life balance
“After 45 years of working in education, I always promised myself that I would return to the teaching side at the end of my career as that’s what I like the most. A franchise really suited me as I can choose my target income and therefore how much I want to work, giving me the time I need to provide support to my elderly parents.”

“My advice to anyone starting out would be to do your research. There are, of course, lots of other tutors out there but because we are confident in our offering, the value for money it provides to parents, and the outcome we can achieve for a child, we’ve always been able to achieve the numbers we want from the business.”
“Anyone looking to start out shouldn’t be alarmed by the costs as there are so many benefits. The business model is not as rigid as it looks at first and the more you do, the more you will earn. If you love students, you’ll be able to develop better relationships which will lead to lots of opportunities to grow. Go with your heart and make it work for you.”
Rewarding progress
“We talk to parents as often as possible, praise students for their improvement and successes and generally have a lovely evening twice a week. We also have an annual prize giving in January which keeps parents engaged and recognises the hard work of our learners. We invite a former student to share their experience of life after school, whether that’s sixth form, college, or an apprenticeship, which provides a valuable insight for our enrolled children.”
“Many of our students are first generation in the UK and we actively support these families with books and advice in addition to the workshops. It means a lot to know we’re making a difference in our community, and that positivity feeds directly into the experience we create for our students and staff.”
