Clear Brews Franchise Coordinator, Ashley, Explains What is Franchising?
Hi, I'm Ashley, the Franchise Coordinator at Clear Brew Ltd. Over the years I've spoken to multiple people who are interested in running their own business, and one question I get asked is..

What actually is franchising?
That's exactly what this guide is here to explain - in plain English, no jargon.
Think of a franchise as stepping into a business that's already figured things out.
Someone else has done all the hard work of building the business from the ground up. They've tested what works, what doesn't, how to attract customers, how to market the business, how to price their services, and how to make it successful.
Rather than keeping all of that experience to themselves, they share it with people who want to run their own business.
That package usually includes:
- An established brand
- Proven systems
- Full training
- Ongoing support
The company or person is called the franchisor, and the person running their own local franchise is the franchisee.
You're starting with a proven business model that's already working. You get the tools, the training and the support - you simply add your own personality, commitment and drive to make it your own.
Why would someone choose a franchise over starting their own business?
This is usually the point where people start to see why franchising is so popular.
For many people, the idea of running their own business is exciting, but it can also feel a little daunting. There is one statement that tends to come up time and time again...
I don’t know if my idea will actually work!
That's the beauty of a franchise - It already does.
The franchisor has spent years building and refining the business, learning what works, what doesn't, and making the mistakes so you don't have to.
Instead of taking a chance on a brand new idea, you're stepping into a business with a proven track record. You can focus on growing the business rather than figuring everything out from scratch.
Ill be completely on my own.
Actually quite the opposite.
One of the biggest benefits of joining a franchise is that you're never left to figure things out by yourself. A good franchisor will give you the training, tools and support to help you get started, and they'll continue to be there as your business grows.
That support can include:
- Day-to-day business advice
- Marketing support and materials
- Operational guidance
- Someone at the end of the phone whenever you need help
Yes, you're running your own business, but you're backed by an experienced team that's invested in your success.
That's why so many people see franchising as the best of both worlds. You get the independence and freedom of being your own boss, with the confidence of knowing you've got support whenever you need it.
What does a franchisee actually get?

Every franchise is different, but most will give you a combination of the following:
- An Established Brand - Customers already recognise and trust the name
- A Proven Business Model - Pricing, processes, and operations that already work
- Full Training - So you're properly equipped with all the tools and knowledge before you start trading
- Ongoing support - From a support office, so you're never left guessing or feeling unsure on what to do.
- Marketing support - Materials, strategy & national campaigns
- A Network of Fellow Franchisees - A strong franchise network that all share the same goal. ethics and values. As well as going through the same journey you are, who you can learn and get support from.
- Buying Power - Collective buying power means lower costs, better supplier agreements, and greater value for every franchisee.
In return, franchisees pay an initial fee to join, plus an ongoing fee known as a management fee.
The management fee can be a percentage of your profit (this can range from 7.5% to 12%) or the most favourable way is a fixed management fee. This meaning the more profit you make, the more you keep.
These fees help fund the training, support, systems, marketing and ongoing development that you're benefiting from as part of the franchise.
Is franchising big in the UK?
Absolutely! Although it's something many people don't know much about until they start looking into it.
Franchising is a well-established and successful part of the UK economy, with franchise businesses operating across a huge range of industries - from food and retail to cleaning, care, home improvement and trade services.
The great thing about franchising is that it isn't limited to one type of business. If a business has a proven model that's been tested, refined and shown to be successful, it has the potential to become a franchise.
For thousands of people across the UK, franchising has become a popular way to become their own boss. It offers the opportunity to run your own business with the backing of an established brand, making it an attractive alternative to starting completely from scratch.
Who is franchising for?
The simple answer? Almost anyone. You don't need years of business experience, a background in finance, or even experience in the industry you're joining. What really matters is your attitude.
The people who tend to do best in franchising are those who are:
- Driven and motivated to build a successful business.
- Willing to learn and follow a proven system that's already been shown to work. Good with people, as many franchises involve working with customers, clients or other businesses.
- Ready to take ownership and build something that's genuinely their own.
- Thinking long-term, with the ambition to grow their business while making the most of the support around them.
If you've ever caught yourself thinking;
"I'd love to run my own business, but I'm worried about doing it completely on my own..."
...then franchising could be exactly what you're looking for.
The bottom line
Hopefully this guide has shown that franchising isn't as complicated as it might first seem. For the right person, it can be an exciting way to take control of your future, become your own boss and build a business you're genuinely proud of.
It won't be the right fit for everyone - and that's okay.
But if you've read this and found yourself thinking, "That actually sounds like something I could do," then perhaps it's worth having a conversation.
After all, every successful franchisee started exactly where you are now... simply wondering if franchising was right for them.

If this sounds like an opportunity you'd like to explore, I'd love to have a conversation with you.
