Wirral Franchisee braves first marathon for charity

A Wirral businessman has ‘fought through the pain barrier’ to raise funds for the Stroke Association after completing his first ever marathon.

Simon Kirkby, who owns oven valeting franchise Ovenu Wirral, tackled the MBNA Chester Marathon, raising over £450 for the Stroke Association – more than trebling his initial target.

Simon, 50, managed to complete his inaugural marathon in just over four hours and finishing within the top 35% of competitors, despite sustaining a leg injury while training for and running in the Great North Run, in September.

Mr Kirkby said:

“After turning 50 earlier this year, I decided to set myself a challenge. I’ve completed many half marathons before, but had never thought about going for the full 26 miles. I am over the moon to have completed my first marathon, despite carrying my injury, and to exceed my donation target has made it even more special.

“I have supported the Stroke Association for many years and it is an excellent charity which impacts on so many people. I would like to thank everyone for their support and donations, all of which has contributed to smashing my fundraising goals.”

The Ovenu oven valet franchise serves homes and businesses throughout the Wirral Peninsula franchise territory, including Great Sutton, Little Sutton, Ellesmere Port, Heswall, Bromborough, Bebington, West Kirby, Hoylake, Moreton, Wallasey, Birkenhead and all surrounding areas.

Ovenu is a franchise network made up of more than 100 businesses owned by men and women working throughout the UK.

Rik Hellewell, Managing Director and Founder of Ovenu franchise, said:

“Simon has been a model Ovenu franchisee and often takes it upon himself to serve the community and raise funds for many causes. I’m really pleased for him that he was able to complete the race and raise significant funds in the process.”

The Ovenu valeting process involves dismantling key components of an oven such as the door, interior panels, fan and shelves and placing them into design-registered tank equipment, which uses safe, non-caustic products to clean the oven parts. The whole process takes around three to four hours and leaves the oven, hob and exterior in immaculate condition.
