Sales Franchises, it’s not all cold calling!

Sales franchises can range from low investment franchises all the way up high investment franchise opportunities. The Franchise sales sector presents prospective franchisees with the option to again look at a retail location or to pursue an online venture of sales.

So, you have a sales background and want to become your own boss?

Then franchising could hold the key to the padlock you're seeking to unlock to a better future. There is a common misconception that sales franchises are just cold calling, this isn’t the case! For example, large established franchise networks will already have national contracts in place, two examples of this are Mould Doctor and The Christmas Decorators. Yes, an element of starting your own franchise does involve you going out, promoting and canvasing your services to local councils, estate agents and landlords in the case of mould doctor but this shouldn’t be the only source of income if you’ve joined a recognised established franchise network. Established franchise networks will have designated franchise support teams set up at their respective head office who will be undertaking a lot of the ‘selling’ on your behalf. It’s in their best interests to secure you as much work as possible, as the more work you undertake and the more you earn, the more the franchisor earns from you. It’s a win win situation! In terms of The Christmas Decorators, they have National contracts in place with companies such as Boots, who during the festive season will seek the services of The Christmas Decorators to bring their stores inline with the seasonal festivities. As this contract is in place through head office, IF you are the owner of a franchise within a franchise territory that contains a Boots store that is part of the contract, then you will be offered the work, without undertaking any of the selling!

This is the same for large cleaning franchise networks such as Dublcheck, a commercial cleaning franchise. Dublcheck will have cleaning contracts in place with corporate offices nationwide and if one of these firms falls within your purchased franchise territory then you’d have the right to service this firm and earn the revenue. As an example, Dublcheck could secure a national contract with a major recruitment firm that has offices in every main city within the UK, any franchisee for Dublcheck within those cities would be invited by Dublcheck to undertake the service for that recruitment firm, without making a single sales call! The franchise head office would also then oversee the renewal and renegotiating terms/rates on the contract.

Other examples of sales franchises that don’t involve cold calling are fast food franchises and automotive repair franchises. The majority of automotive repair franchising work is done via an online/app booking system (set up and paid for by the Franchisor) and any work that is located within your franchise territory will automatically be assigned to you. As an example, I could own an auto screen repair franchise in Bradford, and a customer has logged into the nationwide app and requested a chip repair in Bradford City centre. As the franchisee for this territory I would then receive a notification that would book this into my diary system and I would then undertake the work on the designated time/day slot. It’s important to note that as a franchisee, part of your management service fee contributes towards a marketing budget for the franchise network, and this will go towards marketing the franchise network services and ensuring you receive additional enquiries online. Buying into an established fast food franchise network should result in sales from day one, the branding and reputation of the franchisor should be enough to entice customers through the doors or to place orders online. You’ve bought into a business/brand that has a track record and customers feel comfortable with the services. It’s crucial that you undertake the correct due diligence and ensure you have chosen the correct location for your franchise where you will attract sufficient footfall.
